MJQ Redux: Celebrating Jazz at Sewanee

The University pays tribute to a landmark 1961 event by hosting the Aaron Diehl Quartet in performance, reviving the songs played on campus by the Modern Jazz Quartet, and an historic concert gets long overdue recognition. In April 1961, the MJQ was heard for the first time in the South, performing at Sewanee. The superb concert in the round was one of the first integrated events to occur on campus—or anywhere in the region.

Sewanee Review announces 2018 Aiken Taylor Award winner

The Sewanee Review is pleased to announce that the winner of the 2018 Aiken Taylor Award for Modern American Poetry is Heather McHugh. McHugh has authored 12 books of poetry, including Upgraded to Serious and Eyeshot, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, as well as translations of Celan and Euripides.

Winter Convocation to be held January 19

The University of the South’s Winter Convocation will be held Friday, Jan. 19. Honorary degrees will be presented, Nancy Berner will be installed the eighth provost of the University, and approximately 110 new members will be inducted into the Order of the Gown.

Lighting of the campus Christmas tree

The campus community is invited to join in the lighting of the campus Christmas tree at 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, in front of Guerry Garth. The event will include music, holiday-inspired treats, fellowship—and this year, the chance to try “iceless skating” in the Quad!
