Commencement Schedule of Events

WEDNESDAY, MAY 7
5 p.m. Party for Seniors of the College and their guests, until 7 p.m., at the McGriff Alumni House. 
Hosted by the Associated Alumni. 

THURSDAY, MAY 8
10 a.m. Book Signing by Dr. Sam Williamson, Vice Chancellor emeritus for his book, Sewanee: The First 150 Years, commemorating the University’s sesquicentennial celebration at the University Book and Supply Store.

5 p.m. Children’s Crossing service for the children of graduating seminarians, Chapel of the Apostles. Dinner honoring the children of the seminary graduating class, their guests, families, faculty and staff immediately follows the service in the Hamilton Hall refectory

8 p.m. The Cordell-Lorenz Observatory will be open for casual public observations from 8 until 10 p.m. The Observatory is located on the roof of Carnegie, go to the third floor and follow the signs up to the Observatory.

FRIDAY, MAY 9

10 a.m. Crossing and Commencement for conferring of degrees for 2008 graduates of the School of Theology, All Saints’ Chapel. The Commencement speaker is The Most Rev. Desmond M. Tutu, H’88, Archbishop Emeritus of the City of Cape Town. Honorary degrees conferred on the Rev. Canon James G. Callaway, The Rev. Dr. Marion J. Hatchett and the Rt. Rev. Dabney Tyler Smith.  

Luncheon honoring the Class of 2008 seminary graduates, their guests, families, faculty, and staff immediately following the service, McClurg Hall.

2 p.m.  Booksigning at the University Book and Supply Store.  Professor Harold Goldberg will be signing his book D Day in the Pacific. 

4 p.m.  Green Ribbon Graduation Party until 6 p.m. at the home of Ursula and Art Knoll, 49 Morgan's Steep Road.

5 p.m. Choral Evensong sung by the University Choir, All Saints’ Chapel.

SATURDAY, MAY 10

9 a.m. Sewanee Spring Arts and Crafts May Fair, until 5 p.m., Cravens Park behind Gorgas and Quintard Dorms on Tennessee Avenue. Rain or shine.  Great Sewanee Gift Ideas.

9:30 a.m. Degree recipients form the Baccalaureate procession in front of Breslin Tower.

10 a.m. Baccalaureate Service, All Saints’ Chapel. The Baccalaureate speaker is the Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori, the Presiding Bishop and Primate of the Episcopal Church of the USA. The service will be shown on closed-circuit TV in Guerry Auditorium.

Dedication of the Sesquicentennial Elm in the Quad immediately following service.

Phi Beta Kappa initiation for members, initiates, and their guests in Convocation Hall will follow the dedication of the Sesquicentennial Elm.

The Baccalaureate brunch will immediately follow the tree dedication (admission by prepaid ticket), McClurg Hall.

1 p.m. Closing Champagne Reception for graduating art majors, their families, and friends will be held in the University Art Gallery until 3 p.m.

2 p.m. A reception for political science majors and their families, at the University Archives (next to duPont Library). Annual awards will be announced.

2 p.m. Booksigning at the University Book and Supply Store by authors Samuel Williamson, H'06 and Richard Tillinghast, C'61. 

3 p.m. A reception for chemistry, biochemistry and environmental chemistry majors and their guests at the home of Professor Rob and Jennifer Bachman, 36 Wiggins Creek Dr. until 4:30 p.m

3:30 p.m. Joel and Trudy Cunningham’s reception for the graduates, their guests, faculty, and staff, until 5 p.m., Chen Hall, the home of the Vice Chancellor.

4 p.m. Quiche and sherry reception for graduating Spanish majors and minors and their families until 6 p.m. at the home of Professor Margaret E. Bonds, 137 Oak Hill Circle.

4 p.m. A reception for Russian and Russian studies majors and their families until 5:30 p.m. at the home of Professor Elizabeth Skomp, 277 Wiggins Creek.

5:30 p.m. The Annual International Graduation Party for graduating international students and their guests will be held at the home of the Sam and Joan Williamson, Wiggins Creek.

Sunday, May 11

7 a.m. Breakfast for senior theatre majors and their families at the home of Professor Jennifer Matthews, 185 Curlicue Avenue.

7 a.m. Breakfast for senior phyics majors and their families until 9 a.m. at the home of Professor Randy Peterson, 109 Curlicue Road. 

7:30 a.m. Holy Eucharist, St. Luke’s Chapel.

7:30 a.m. Breakfast for the Mathematics and Computer Science Department majors, minors and their families until 9:30 a.m. at the home of Professor Emily Puckette and John Benson, 56 Tennessee Avenue.

7:30 a.m. Breakfast for forestry, geology, and natural resource majors and their families, at the home of Professor Bran and Cindy Potter, 341 Kentucky Avenue, until 9 a.m.

9 a.m. Doors open to All Saints’ Chapel for guests with tickets.

9:30 a.m. Degree candidates from the College of Arts and Sciences form Commencement procession in front of Breslin Tower. Faculty assemble at Walsh-Ellett Hall.

10 a.m. Convocation for conferring of degrees, All Saints’ Chapel. (tickets required)

Convocation will be shown on closed-circuit TV in McClurg Hall (tickets required) and in Guerry and Blackman Auditoriums (no tickets required).

Luncheon honoring the Class of 2008 graduates, their guests, families, and University faculty, immediately following the Convocation, the Quadrangle.

Rain location: McClurg Hall and the porches and hallways of University buildings.

On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of Commencement Weekend, the Leonidas Polk Carillon will be played by Carillonneur John Bordley, Professor of Chemistry.
