The “Summer in Berlin” program consists of a three-week language course at the DiD German language institute in Berlin where students take language classes along with other international students. The DiD institute places Sewanee students into courses according to their languages skills, which are determined through a placement test. DiD provides sixty classes of forty-five minutes for the three-week period.  Students are placed in homes with German host families. While DiD will provide instruction for the language classes, the accompanying Sewanee faculty member is responsible for cultural instruction and area excursions. The afternoon programs offered by the Sewanee faculty member are part of the course and introduces them to the cultural space of Berlin. The walks are focused on literature about Berlin’s neighborhoods. DiD provides additional excursions, among them walking tours through Berlin’s alternative culture, and excursions to Potsdam, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage monument. Berlin also offers a large number of concerts and theater performances, among them the famous Brecht theater “Berlin Ensemble” which will give students first-hand access to Germany’s theater scene.

The program will take place in the summer of 2019 from May 20-June 8. The cost for the program is $3100, which includes course fees, room and half-board (in home-stays), and four Sewanee credit hours. All students are encouraged to apply for a Jackson Cross scholarship.
Students should plan to arrive in Berlin on May 19 and to depart on June 8. Travel to and from Berlin is independent from the program. Upon arrival, students will be picked up at the airport and taken to their guest family.

Please direct any inquiries to Dr. Richard Apgar at This program is open to applicants not enrolled in a degree program at Sewanee.

Cross Scholarship

Established in 1997, the Jackson Cross (C’30) scholarship offers assistance for Sewanee students studying abroad in Germany. These funds are awarded on the basis of financial need and to assist with additional costs incurred as part of study abroad, particularly in the summer, including international travel and personal expenses. There are two deadlines each year: for programs in the summer and fall terms, the application deadline is in early April; for programs in the spring semester, the deadline is in early October. Students studying in Germany or Austria are encouraged to apply here.
