Sewanee Review (Initials)

Senior students from all disciplines are invited to apply for the Aiken Taylor Internship with the Sewanee Review.

The Aiken Taylor Internship is an exceptional opportunity for a student from the University of the South to gain experience in the field of editing and publishing. With support from the Aiken Taylor fund (in the postgraduate year) this student will assist the editor and managing editor at all levels of production of the nation’s oldest continuously published literary quarterly, the Sewanee Review. One student will be chosen each year for this internship through an application process that requires a recommendation, resume, writing sample, and proofreading test.

The Aiken Taylor intern will assist the editor and managing editor at all levels of magazine production, from the initial screening of received manuscripts to checking final page proofs before printing; he or she will be involved in the organization, production, distribution, and promotion of the issues to be published during his or her tenure. Finally, the internship will include work with permissions and copyright law. Having published many of the great American critics, poets, and fiction writers, the Sewanee Review is contacted regularly for reprint permissions. The intern will learn how to set reprint fees and then pass those on to authors as royalties.

The intern will also help plan and oversee several readings sponsored by the Aiken Taylor fund—including the Sewanee Review Open House and the annual Aiken Taylor Award events, when a major American poet is honored in Sewanee over three days with dinners, receptions, a lecture, all culminating in a reading by that poet, which is open to the university and community at large.

Special focus will be on using social media to increase exposure for the magazine targeting new writers and new readers. Working with the managing editor, the intern will curate and edit Spilt Ink, an online series of original essays by current contributors on the craft of writing and the business of publishing.
