Professor Irvin's Letter Goes Viral

Matt Irvin

Professor Matthew Irvin was the subject of a piece in the Chronicle of Higher Education, after a letter of his to syndicated columnist Dan Savage was published and went viral. The letter discussed the pejorative use of the word “medieval” in contemporary popular media, and how misperceptions of the Middle Ages can harm our understanding of modern problems. The article in the Chronicle, by David Perry, explores the benefits and pleasures of a piece of writing “going viral.” Matthew Irvin is also Chair of Medieval Studies and Director of the Sewanee Medieval Colloquium.
