Senior Anthropology Minor Travels to Tanzania

Sara Balte discussing the social stigma of albinism in Tanzania.

Senior Anthropology Minor Sara Balte participated in a summer internship at the Nengo Primary School and Protectorate Centre in Kibondo, Tanzania. The Centre is a government-sponsored organization fighting the social stigma of albinism in Tanzania where nearly 80 albino Tanzanians have been killed since 2000. Sara joined discussions of “race” in two of Dr. Celeste Ray’s Introduction to Cultural Anthropology classes to explain the social injustices and dangers children with albinism endure in Tanzania and surrounding countries based on perceptions of color.
